Coffee and Pastries are self-serve on patio To state the obvious, 2020 has been challenging for everyone. We don’t have all the answers, but as The On Being Project reminds us — asking beautiful questions is just as important. One question our team asks regularly is : How can we continue to show up for our community and those in need of support? Here are a few ways we have been living that question : Collecting + Donating food to our local Food Pantry every Tuesday.
To date, Otto’s + our customers have helped raise over $10,000 for the local food pantry. So incredible! Adding a donation button to our online ordering form to support Food Justice. To date, Otto’s customers have helped raise $2,145 for Soul Fire Farm and National Black Food + Justice Alliance. Creating a Food Justice section on this newsletter and starting to have an employee present a topic on Food Justice at our monthly staff meeting. Researching and continuing to add Minority and Woman-owned businesses + farms to our shelves. Encouraging everyone to VOTE. We will be closing early - 4pm - on November 3rd to allow all of our employees time to vote and will be paying them for those 2 hours. Free Coffee for anyone that shows they voted! Sponsoring the Germantown Writing + Arts Competition (see more info on how to apply below)! Providing a 10% discount on breakfast + lunch orders for our local teachers. Participating in local volunteer efforts with the Germantown Economic Development Committee (GEDAC), Parks Commission, Waterfront Committee, and Library. Helping our neighbors adapt to the challenges of this pandemic by selling beautiful Athabold bouquets and Gaskins goodies at Otto’s! Fundraising to support local organizations. We recently handed out $2,000 in checks to our local Fire Department, Parsonage, Library, Farmers Market, Parks, and Waterfront (thank you!) Offering a bin in the front of our building for compost drop-off. Committing to compostable to-go containers, utensils, cups, and bulk packaging to decrease our impact on the planet. And most importantly, slowing down and taking care of ourselves first, so that we can then show up for others. This is the work that keeps us going when times get hard.
